The global automotive traction motor market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 33.7% from USD 4.1 billion in 2021 to USD 17.3 billion by 2026. Increasing demand of electric vehicles, manufacturing of high performance motors, and supporting government policies are factors responsible to drive the automotive traction motor market.

Technological advancements in EVs have an immense role to play in the growing demand for traction motors. These new technologies are grabbing the attention of EV manufacturers worldwide. For instance, in October 2019, BMW Group awarded Magna International its largest production order for transmission technologies. The multi-year contract includes all front-wheel drive dual-clutch transmissions, including hybrid transmission variants. The transmission technologies will be used in more than 170 different vehicle applications. Magna’s new hybrid solution has no impact on the overall package size of the transmission, thus providing BMW with manufacturing flexibility.

Although the overall production and sales of new vehicles came to a halt across the globe due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the impact on electric vehicles was positive. The number of EVs sold in 2020 was more than the total EVs sold in 2019. However, component manufacturing was affected negatively, and small Tier II & Tier III manufacturers faced liquidity issues. However, the industry witnessed a slow recovery from the second half of 2020, with global deliveries of BEVs and PHEVs increasing 43% year-on-year, though the global light vehicle market witnessed a decline in growth by 14%. According to EV-Volumes, the global EV market share increased from 2.5% in 2019 to 4.2% in 2020. Almost 1.4 million plug-in EVs were sold in Europe in 2020, approximately 137% more than in 2019. Key factors for the growth in Europe were new models; incentive boosts by green recovery funds; the 95g CO2 emission mandate; and the intense promotion of plug-in EVs. In China, NEV sales recovered in the second half of 2020, with a growth rate of more than 80% year-on-year from July to December. EV sales in the US only increased by 4%, despite the Tesla Model-Y launch. A decline in EVs sales was witnessed in Japan, Canada, and Australia.

Due to the pandemic, many countries imposed a complete lockdown of more than two months, which, in turn, impacted the production of electric vehicles and battery components. Manufacturing units around the world were shut down, and electric vehicle sales took a significant hit initially. However, the majority of the automakers resumed vehicle production with limited production and necessary measures.

Automotive traction motor makers suffered from a significant reduction in revenue in Q1 of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though sales and net profit improved by Q3 of 2020. The net organic sales BorgWarner decreased by 43% in Q2 2020 as compared to Q2 2019. However, the company made recovery in Q3 2020 with net sales increasing by 2% as compared to year 2019 Q3. The impact of COVID-19 on Schaeffler was significant, with the sales of the first half of 2020 declining by 22.9% as compared to the first half of the previous year. DENSO Corporation saw a minor reduction in revenue, with March 2020 figures showing a decline of around 3%. The segmental revenue figures of year 2020 were roughly the same as that of the previous year. The company has proactively responded to the COVID-19 crisis by identifying risks and opportunities based on factors brought about by the economic disruption and resulting technological disruption due to the pandemic. These include the shift towards a recycling oriented low-carbon society, diversification of people’s values and consumption behavior, and emergence of social issues.

Although the pandemic impacted the revenues of major players, the sale of electric vehicles increased in many countries, leading to overall growth in the automotive traction motor market in 2020.Upcoming supply contracts and new product developments are expected to lead to a steady recovery post 2020, further supporting the growth of the automotive traction motor market.
